Where We Grow
Our farm is located in Oswego, halfway between the cities of Plainfield and Yorkville, where all our produce is grown and harvested. With work often starting in February or March, we start about half of our vegetables from seeds in our greenhouses for plants to transplant, the rest direct seeded into the ground later in the spring.
Our Process
In April and May we begin plantings both in and outside of our greenhouses. This allows both an immense variety of crops necessary to sustain the variety that we offer at our locations and a head start over direct seeding.
In June, and July we continue plantings and begin harvesting some of our earliest producing crops. Because of the addition of high tunnels with in-ground growing, we are working on extending our season and offering produce earlier than our usual season allows.
Late July, August and September is the pure harvest season. Long hot days in Illinois and great black soil allow us to grow the best tasting vegetables.
Late September we start picking our fall products, including pumpkins, winter squash, decorative corn, corn stalks, and much more. Through October (and usually into November at our Westmont location), we still have a variety of summer vegetables, but supply does become more limited as time goes on.
During this time, we also begin preparing for the next season by planting garlic and crops that need the hard winter frost to bloom in the late spring and early summer.
In November and December, we wrap up and tuck in the farm for the winter, spreading leaves to nourish the soil and tilling in all the plants for the season.
